 RAVENA – Oma Desma (Napper) Babcock, 95, passed into Glory on October 22, 2010. She was born in a log cabin in Saranac Hollow on January 23, 1915 to William John and Vida Wright Napper. When she was three the family moved to the Champlain Valley, Oma worked on the family farm side by side with her father and brother. She graduated from Westport High School in 1933 and held an Associate’s degree in Foods and Nutrition, from Canton Agricultural and Technology College, then part of St. Lawrence University. On November 29, 1941 she married Harold Grant Babcock. They established their home in Moriah, NY. After Harold’s retirement from Republic Steel in 1971, they wintered and established another home in Pomona Park, Florida. In both communities Oma was a devoted friend to many, serving her God and community. She served as president of the Moriah PTA, 4H leader, Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge, and in many offices in the Moriah Methodist Church, including chair of the Administrative Board and as a Sunday school teacher. She was a great baker and seamstress, but more than that she was known for her compassion for others, willingness to volunteer, move forward, and get the job done. In 1996, Oma moved to Ravena to be close with her daughter, where she made many new friends and was active in Grace Methodist Church. Since 2004, Oma has been a nursing home resident. Her family would like to thank the staff at Wesley Health Care Center for their loving care.
Oma is survived by her daughter Beth Babcock, her son-in-law Michael Ellis, both of Feura Bush, by three grandchildren, Harold of Manhattan Beach, CA, Robert of Albany and Aimee Babcock-Ellis of Bethesda, MD. She is also survived by her sister Ileana Napper Tryon of Westport and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Harold, 1994; her brother James and his wife Floy; her brother-in-law John Tryon, and her cousins Glenn and Erma Smith.
Oma spent many hours listening to RISE radio for the visually impaired; it was her lifeline to the world. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to WMHT-RISE, 4 Global View, Troy, NY 12180 in honor of Oma.
Family and friends may call at the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena, NY on Sunday, October 24 from 2 to 6 PM. The funeral services will be held on Monday, October 25 at 10 AM at Grace United Methodist Church, 16 Hillcrest Drive, Ravena. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery, Moriah, NY.
