Ravena- Cosmo A.
DiPierro Sr. (Pop), 85, of Ravena passed away peacefully Sunday May
17th, 2009 surrounded by his loving family.
2nd 1924 in Albany New York, he was the son of the late Leonardo and
Theresa DiPierro, step son of the late Addolorratta DiPierro.
Cosmo was a
graduate of Albany High School. He proudly served in World War II
in the 401st bomb group, 8th air force as a radio gunner on a B-17
from 1942-1945. He completed 32 bombing missions during his tour of
duty, the second most in World War II. He was awarded the
Distinguished Flying Cross, as well as the air medal with two Oak
Leaf Clusters amongst other awards and honors.
arrived home from the war he married Charlotte Blais, the love of
his life. They resided in South Bethlehem where they raised their
family. Cosmo was a mason by trade, but retired as plant supervisor
after 24 years with Atlantic Cement (LaFarge). He was a member of
the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis of Delmar and the VFW. Cosmo loved
to sing and most recently performed with the Vets of Albany Choir
under the direction of Rachelle Vishneowski. The family would like
to especially thank Michael Battisto, his best friend of 69 years,
for introducing him to the choir nine years ago and for enriching
Cosmo was predeceased by
his loving and devoted wife of 51 years, Charlotte and sisters Mary
Gisotti, Grace Girzone, Antoinette Hess, and step brother Archangelo
Losavio as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his
loving children, Leo (Marybeth) of Monroe North Carolina, Denise
(Luther) Legg of South Bethlehem, Cosmo (Julie) of Portland Maine,
and Claire Roberts (John Zolner) of Ravena, brother-in-law Denis
(Shari) Blais of East Greenbush, brother Rocco (Angelina) Spinelli
of Albany. He leaves behind twelve loving grandchildren and fourteen
great grandchildren who called him Pop, as well as his devoted
canine companion Chloe.
Calling hours will be
Thursday May 21st from 3-8 at Babcock funeral home in Ravena.
Funeral services will be held on Friday May 22nd at 9 AM at St.
Patrick’s church in Ravena. In lieu of flowers, donations can be
made to the Vets of Albany Choir, mail code 117, 113 Holland Avenue,
Albany, NY 12208.
members of Mother McAuley Council 3424 Knights of Columbus are
requested to meet at the Babcock Funeral Home, 5 p.m. Thursday, May
21 to pay respects to their departed member, Cosmo DiPierro. Jim
Feuerbach Grand Knight
