RAVENA – Waldo “Wally” A. Lozano, 71, died suddenly on November 29, 2010. Wally was born in Albany and was the son of the late Waldo and Rose Lozano.
Wally was a 1957 graduate of Christian Brothers Academy of Albany and a graduate of Albany Business College. At CBA Wally was a standout athlete in football, basketball and baseball. After high school he was signed to play professional baseball in the Atlanta Braves organization. After his tenure with the Braves he played professionally for the Brantford Red Sox of the Canadian Professional Baseball League. He was inducted into the CBA Hall of Fame as well as The Albany Twilight League Hall of Fame. In 1960 he was the Albany Twilight League batting champion when he hit .407.
During his business career Wally worked for a variety of companies but is most widely known as the owner of Lefty’s Sporting Goods in Latham for nearly 25 years. After selling Lefty’s Wally continued his career in the sporting goods business working for Anaconda Sports where he was currently employed. He developed many long lasting relationships from his years in the sporting goods business and as one of his grandchildren would always say when at athletic events with Wally…”Does Grandpa know everybody?”
Wally had many interests in his life but few that he was as devoted to as; his family, his wife Rosemary, his religion, The Yankees and The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. On a Saturday afternoon in the fall you could always find Wally arranging his schedule around what time the Irish would be on TV. The only thing that could interrupt an ND game was an event for one of his 20 grandchildren whom he adored. At the time of his passing Wally still maintained a very active lifestyle participating in bowling leagues and the game he was most passionate about baseball/softball. Wally continued to participate in softball where most recently he played in a national tournament where he led his team in offense by batting an impressive .722 over a 10 game stretch. Wally was an avid golfer and relished his time hitting the links with his friends; Chicky, Billy, Pat and Angelo.
He is survived by his beloved wife Rosemary and her children Tina(David) Giudotti of SanDiego, CA and Michael (Heather) Constantine of Selkirk. He was the devoted father of Jim (Mary) Lozano of Guilderland, Sharon (John) Montagne of Latham, Mike Lozano of Waterford, Gary (Wendy) Lozano of Latham, Lynne (Bill) Commisso of Cicero, Lisa (Dennis) Kruzinski of Colonie, Erin (John) Odorisio of Germantown, MD. Wally is the loving brother of Marcel Travis of Ravena and Fran Farrell of Coeymans. He was also the cherished grandfather of Christopher, Kasey and Mackenzie Lozano, Taylor, Connor, Brendan and Justin Montagne, Nicholas and Andrea Lozano, Joey, Sarah, Ryan and Madison Lozano, William, Nicholas and Michaella Commisso, Dennis, Leah and Devan Kruzinski and Maggie Odorisio. Wally was predeceased by his first wife Margaret “Peg” Lozano.
Wally was a devoted supporter of his alma mater and a man of great faith and the family strongly encourages donations to Christian Brothers Academy to establish the Wally Lozano Scholarship or to St. Patrick’s Church in Ravena in lieu of flowers.
