Theresa M. Diacetis Smith - July 26, 2009

NISKAYUNA – Theresa M. Diacetis Smith passed away surrounded by her loving family on July 26, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma and Renal Failure.

Theresa was the wife of Frank Smith of Niskayuna and the daughter of the late Theodore and Conchetta Diacetis of Ravena.  She was born on December 4, 1940 at Brady Maternity Hospital, Albany.  She was raised in Ravena, graduated from St. Patrick’s Elementary School and graduated from Vincention High School, Albany, class of 1958.

Theresa is survived by her devoted husband of 47 years, Frank; her loving daughters and sons-in-law, Teri (John) Burke and Patricia (Jamie) Montena;  two beautiful grandsons, Matthew and Evan Montena, all of Niskayuna;  brother, Theodore (Mary Jane) Diacetis of Albany;  sister Barbara (Terry) Powell of Earlton;  and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.  Theresa was predeceased by her younger brother Rev. Anthony C. Diacetis.

While her girls were young, you could always find Theresa volunteering her time at St. Patrick’s School working on the huge card parties and the ever famous spaghetti suppers.  She also was involved with her children’s world, with Brownies, Girl Scouts, Swim team, softball and high school sports.  After her family was grown, she returned to New York State retiring from the Education Department in 1996.

Theresa and her family would like to say special thanks to Dr. Thomas Shumacher and his staff at the Capital District Dialysis Center for the professional and caring way they treated her during over 6 years on dialysis.  Dr. Schumacher’s personal care and support was truly exceptional.  Thanks also to the staff and volunteers at Community Hospice of Schenectady County for their special care.

As she used to say, everyone around her has certainly been on one hell of a roller coaster ride.  Theresa’s sense of humor kept the rest of her family and friends going through her long illness.  She used to say you can’t worry about what you can’t change.  In keeping with Theresa’s wishes there will be no calling hours.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Community Hospice of Schenectady County, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308.

A Mass of Celebration will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, Ravena on Sunday, August 2nd at 5 PM.
