Frank D. “Mummy” Varcasia - February 5, 2009

 RAVENA – Frank D. “Mummy” Varcasia, 85, entered eternal life Thursday, February 5, 2009 after a long illness.  Frank was born July 10, 1923 and lived all his life in Ravena.  He was the son of the late Guy and Louise Varcasia.

     Mummy graduated from St. Patrick’s School in 1937 and Coeymans High School in 1941.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII and served for 39 months.  At the time of his discharge he was a Pharmacist’s Mate 1st Class.  He served aboard the U.S.S. St. George in the South Pacific.

     Frank played softball and baseball for over 30 years.  He umpired baseball and softball for over 30 years and also coached Little League Baseball.  He was also an avid bowler.

     In 1984 Frank retired after 38 years of service with NY Central Railroad, Penn Central and Conrail.  He served as the shop committeeman for the fireman and oiliers for 25 years.

     Frank was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church, Ravena serving as an usher for over 50 years and served on the Parish Council.  Mummy was a Life member of the Ravena V.F.W. Post 9594, a member of the American Legion Post 114, the K of C Council 3424, Charter member of the Ravena Rescue Squad, life member of over 50 years of the Ravena Hose Co., and a member of the Railroad Club of Albany.

     Survivors include his beloved wife of over 60 years, Anna (Nunziato) Varcasia;  loving daughter, Mary Lou Clifford;  brother Patrick Varcasia;  sister Millie Cornwall;  and many nieces and nephews.  Frank was predeceased by his brother Joseph Varcasia and sisters Mary Scalzo and Frances Giacomini.

     Funeral services will be held 9:30 AM Monday, February 9th at St. Patrick’s Church, Ravena.  Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Coeymans.  Friends may call at the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena on Sunday from 3 to 5 PM.

In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Frank may be made to St. Patrick’s Church or to the Raven Rescue Squad.
