RAVENA – Carl F. Cumm, 84, of Ravena, New York, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Nov. 30th after a long illness. Carl, the youngest Son of Frank and Etta Cumm (Barshaw) was born on April 11th, 1927 in Selkirk, New York where he grew up with five sisters and a brother. As a young man, Carl attended Coeymans High School while he apprenticed under his Father to become a Journeyman Millwright. At the age of 17, he joined the US Navy, and because of his construction and mechanical skills, became a member of the Naval Construction Battalion “Seabees.” Shortly after the invasion of the island, Carl shipped out to Okinawa where he served until the end of the war. After his Honorable Discharge from the Navy in 1946, he married Barbara Cumm (Pebler) on February 1st, 1948. Carl and Barbara lived in Buffalo for a short while before returning to Ravena in 1949 after which he built their house on Wendell Street where he and Barb raised their family. Carl worked for 49 years as a millwright, mechanic, and maintenance supervisor at Barber and Bennet Feed Mills, the Atlantic Cement Company, Stieffel Laboratories, and Picotte Management Company until he retired in 2003. An avid outdoorsman, Carl enjoyed deer hunting, duck hunting, and fishing, and spent many days doing so with his sons, nephews and his friend and Brother-in-Law, Cliff Winne. Carl and Barb enjoyed vacationing with their family on Cape Cod, entertaining family, friends, and guests at their house on Wendell Street, and were active participants in village and town government. Carl was a kind and gentle man, a stalwart friend, father, and husband. He was loved by many, respected by all who met him, and will be missed forever.
