       VIRGINIA BEACH - Mary Kay Cofer Iavarone passed away peacefully on January 31, 2021, following a courageous battle with COVID-19.  Kay was born in Springfield, IL, on January 27, 1946, to the late John R. and Eleanor “Sparky” Cofer and was the oldest of their five children.

Kay and her husband, Joe, owned and operated Sparks Cleaners in Virginia Beach for many years.  Kay continued to operate the business with her youngest brother, John P., until his sudden death in 2006.  Kay was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and neighbor whose heart and door was always open and will be greatly missed.

Kay is survived by her devoted husband, Joe; cherished daughter, Gina (John) Essa; adored grandson, Jack Essa; siblings, Judy (Ricky) Mays, Rich (Karan) Cofer, and Susan Cofer; nephew, Johnny (Jenn) Mays; grandnephews, Riley and Parker Mays; four step-children; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great grandchildren. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 AM on Saturday, March 20th at The Church of St. Patrick, Ravena.  Masks are required, social distancing will be observed and a limited number of people in church. Kay will be laid to rest following the Mass in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Coeymans beside her parents and brother. Memorial contributions may be made to The Wildlife Center of Virginia, P.O.
